In the series Stigma, the artist has burned the surface and carved expressive lines into to wood. The title refers to the Greek word ‘stigma’ – meaning mark or scar made by fire or a sharp knife. The word is used in several disciplines, however, the artistic expression and choice of technique references the historical and social hierarchy of branding or classification of groups as well as to religious stigmata. In this series it also references the action of the artist where fire and sharp objects are used to puncture, or ‘brand’, the surface of the wood, closely linking the chosen technique with concept and pictorial subject-matter.
